The Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016 contain detailed provisions in Schedule 1 for the selection of landfill sites.
According to the rules, a landfill site must be:
- 100 meters away from a river
- 200 meters from a pond
- 500 meters away from highways, habitations, public parks, and water supply wells
- 20 km away from airports/airbases.
The rules also state that the construction of landfills on hills should be avoided, and if unavoidable, should be in plain areas within 25 kilometers. Transfer stations and processing facilities are permitted in hilly areas.
