With reference to pulse production in India, consider the following statements:

  1. Black gram can be cultivated as both kharif and rabi crop.
  2. Green-gram alone accounts for nearly half of pulse production.
  3. In the last three decades, while the production of kharif pulses has increased, the production of rabi pulses has decreased. Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

D.1, 2 and 3
A.1 only
B.1 and 3 only
C.2 only

Correct Answer: Option A

Statement 1 is correct: Black gram (Urad) is cultivated in both Kharif and Rabi seasons. During Kharif, it's cultivated throughout the country, and during Rabi, it's well-suited to rice fallows, particularly in southern and southeastern India.

Statement 2 is not correct: Gram (Chickpeas) is the most dominant pulse, accounting for about 40% of total production, followed by Tur/Arhar at 15-20%, and Urad/Black Matpe and Moong at around 8-10% each. Green-gram alone does not account for nearly half of pulse production.

Statement 3 is not correct: The production of pulses for both Rabi and Kharif seasons has increased in the last three decades. For example, Kharif pulses production increased from 44.48 lakh tonnes in 2000-01 to 55.30 lakh tonnes in 2016-17. Rabi pulses production also increased from 66.27 lakh tonnes in 2000-01 to 108.18 lakh tonnes in 2015-16.

Hence, only statement 1 is correct.
