UPSC Science and Technology: Frequently Asked Topics and How to Prepare
A comprehensive guide to the Science and Technology topics asked in UPSC Prelims from 2014 to 2024 with preparation strategy for 2026.
Science and Technology has evolved from a peripheral subject in UPSC Prelims to one of the most heavily tested areas. In 2024, the paper had 14 Science and Technology questions. In 2018, it had just 6. This is one of the fastest-growing topics in the exam.
Why Science and Technology Is Hard to Prepare
Unlike Polity or History, Science and Technology has no fixed textbook that UPSC follows. Questions come from current events, scientific discoveries, government programmes, and space missions. This makes it unpredictable but also patterns it: UPSC consistently tests topics that were in the news in the preceding 12 to 18 months.
The Six High-frequency Subcategories
Space and Satellite Technology (2 to 3 questions per year)
ISRO missions, satellite categories (polar orbit versus geostationary), space launch vehicles (GSLV versus PSLV differences), and recent achievements. Missions like Chandrayaan, Aditya-L1, and Gaganyaan are high-priority. International space missions (NASA, ESA) also appear occasionally.
Biotechnology and Genetics (2 to 3 questions per year)
Gene editing (CRISPR-Cas9), genetically modified crops, stem cell therapy, and bioinformatics. UPSC has asked about specific GE crops approved in India, the difference between GM and transgenic organisms, and biosafety protocols.
Defence Technology (1 to 2 questions per year)
Missile systems (Agni, BrahMos, Prithvi series), types of warheads, hypersonic technology, and defence exports. India's defence indigenisation programme and the DRDO achievements feature regularly.
Digital Technology and Cybersecurity (2 to 3 questions per year)
Artificial Intelligence, machine learning, blockchain, 5G technology, quantum computing basics, and cybersecurity frameworks. The IT Act, data protection legislation, and India's digital public infrastructure (UPI, AADHAR, DigiLocker) are also tested.
Nuclear Technology (1 question per year)
Types of nuclear reactors, thorium fuel cycle, India's three-stage nuclear programme, and nuclear waste management. The thorium reserves and India's strategic interest in fast breeder reactors are standard questions.
Health and Pharmaceutical Technology (1 to 2 questions per year)
Vaccine technology (mRNA vaccines after COVID), antimicrobial resistance, drug regulatory frameworks, and biosimilars. UPSC asked about mRNA vaccine technology in 2022; expect continued questions on newer vaccine platforms.
The Current Affairs Dimension
Unlike other subjects, 60 to 70 percent of Science and Technology questions are directly linked to news from the preceding year. The preparation approach must therefore include:
- Monthly current affairs reading with a focus on science and technology events
- Following ISRO, DRDO, and DST announcements
- Tracking technology policy developments: semiconductor policy, AI governance frameworks, space policy
Preparation Strategy
Step 1: Attempt all Science and Technology PYQs on UPSC HUB in one sitting. This gives you an immediate sense of the question style.
Step 2: For each question you got wrong, trace back to the concept. Create a short note on that concept.
Step 3: Follow science and technology current affairs for the last 12 months. Important events from mid-2024 to mid-2025 will likely appear in UPSC Prelims 2026.
Step 4: Use AI mind maps to connect technology concepts. A mind map showing how CRISPR connects to GMOs, biosafety, and ethics captures UPSC's way of linking topics.
Science and Technology rewards aspirants who stay current. Build the habit of reading science news, and the questions will start to feel familiar.
