UPSC Prelims Strategy 2026: A 90 Day Preparation Plan
A structured 90-day roadmap to clear UPSC Prelims 2026 with topic-wise priorities, mock test schedules, and revision techniques used by top scorers.
UPSC Prelims 2026 is scheduled for May. With 90 days on hand, a structured plan is the difference between clearing the cutoff and missing it by 3 to 5 marks. This guide breaks down exactly how to use those 90 days.
Why Most Aspirants Underperform
The most common mistake is spending too much time reading and too little time practising. UPSC is a test of recall under pressure, not a test of how much you have read. Aspirants who score 110 plus typically spend at least 40 percent of their preparation time on mock tests and previous year questions.
Month 1: Foundation and PYQ Analysis (Days 1 to 30)
Week 1 and 2: Topic-wise PYQ deep dive
Start with the five highest-weightage subjects: Polity, History, Geography, Economy, and Environment. For each subject, do the following.
- Attempt all previous year questions from 2014 to 2024 on UPSC HUB, topic-wise
- Do not focus on speed at this stage; focus on understanding why the correct answer is correct
- For every question you get wrong, note the concept in a revision notebook
Week 3 and 4: Science, Technology and Current Affairs
Science and Technology questions have increased from 5 to 12 per year between 2019 and 2024. Do not underestimate this section. Cover space, biotechnology, AI, and defence technology concepts from the last two years.
Month 2: Mock Tests and Weak Area Targeting (Days 31 to 60)
The 2 plus 1 rule
Take two topic-wise mock tests per week and one full-length mock test every Sunday. After each test, spend twice the test duration on review. Most aspirants skip review. That is why they keep making the same mistakes.
Tracking your weak areas
After 8 full-length mocks, you will notice a clear pattern. You consistently lose marks in specific subtopics. In Month 2, devote 30 minutes per day exclusively to those weak areas.
CSAT in Month 2
If your CSAT score is below 70 in practice tests, allocate one hour per day to Paper 2. Reading comprehension can be improved rapidly with focused practice. Practise at least one CSAT mock test per week.
Month 3: Intensive Revision and Speed Drills (Days 61 to 90)
The final 30 days
Stop reading new material after Day 75. The brain needs repetition to consolidate, not new information. Revise your notes twice, then take one full-length mock test every two days.
Speed is everything in the final week
UPSC Prelims is 100 questions in 120 minutes. You have 72 seconds per question. Practice timed question sets of 25 questions in 30 minutes to build the right rhythm.
The night before the exam
Do not attempt any new mock tests on the final day. Revise your short notes, sleep by 10 pm, and eat a light breakfast. Your preparation is done. Trust the process.
Subject-wise Time Allocation (Per Week)
| Subject | Hours per Week |
|---|---|
| Polity | 3 hours |
| History and Art & Culture | 3 hours |
| Geography | 2.5 hours |
| Economy | 2.5 hours |
| Environment | 2 hours |
| Science and Technology | 2 hours |
| Current Affairs | 2 hours |
| Mock Tests and Review | 5 hours |
